Something to do, totally new...
Watching the preview for the new "Sherlock Holmes" movie, I'm finding that I can forgive ALMOST anything but a)reiterating nothing but the old cliches; & b) making Watson look stupid. Although, really, Holmes was noted to be quite fanatically neat about his person, however much of a slob he was in his home.

That was my reaction. I was like - Holmes? Unshaven in public? With untidy clothes? What?

Indeed.

Yes I do have a Sherlock Holmes fondness. And I do enjoy the Holmes and Watson relationship. :-)

I admit, I'm a Holmes fanatic. I *own* a copy of the Baring-Gould annotated Canon.

Jeremy Brett *was* Holmes. The BBC/Lifetime Sherlock Holmes series was *amazing*. They *paid attention* to the details and got everything *right*.

Basil Rathbone was a great actor, but never really understood the Victorians. Still, those movies were at least watchable.

This? I watched the trailer on the 'net today. I *flatly refuse* to watch the film that trailer was advertising.

Single volume or double? Slip case? It's one of the prizes of my collection too. I'm waiting 'til I can afford the latest annotated (I've got the last third of the 3 volume set), & then there's the, what, Oxford press single volumes, you know the long, drawn out series w/ all the notes? Everyone brings those to the study groups & I always drool.

I admit I'm in the minority but I found Brett's performances as Holmes unwatchable. He's not my idea of the man any more than Rathbone was (ie he got a few things right but the flavour is wrong). Best Holmes I've ever HEARD was Edward Petherbridge in the radio series he did. THAT was remarkable. My favourite on-camera performance of Holmes was actually Tom Baker in a not-bad production of _Hound_. Have you seen it?

I don't mind ORIGINAL messings w/ the stories. For the most part I adore "Without a Clue." But something like "Young Sherlock Holmes" which is one insulting cliche after another, OH that's irritating.

Are you a member of any of the Scion Societies? I don't even know the name of the KC one, sorry to say.

I've never seen the Tom Baker one; I've heard it was fantastic. Jeremy was always playing Angry!Holmes, I'll admit. My Baring-Gould is the folio-size single volume, no slipcase, printed by B. Dalton.

And my Holmes-fu is inferior; I am not an Irregular, because I still haven't *found* them. I will be a Watson forever; I'm firmly convinced I'm on this Earth to provide comedy relief.

(Speaking of comedy relief) Have you seen "Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother"? With Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman? *Not* canon, but really, really funny.

I really liked Fred Saberhagen's Holmes stories, "The Holmes-Dracula Files" and...the one whose name is escaping me at the moment, where he's going after Jack the Ripper. But I count those as pastiche, not as bad cliches like "Young Sherlock".

Yes, I love that movie, though my husband hates it. I was also terribly fond of "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" (not to be confused w/ the book by the same name).

I've read, I think, 3 different Holmes/Dracula pastiches & there are probably more, so @ this point they're all in my mental blender. I've read A LOT of pastiches, though only a tiny fraction of what's out there.

I'm not an Irregular either- most of us aren't (they're picky, what can I say) but I AM a member of the Norwegian Explorers, who gladly accept anyone who'd like to join. THAT'S the mark of a fun society. ;-)

BTW, if you're not doing anything next July, we're having another conference up here. The speakers are usually quite good & the LIBRARY is fantastic. The largest collection of Sherlockiana in the world- everything from chocolate easter bunnies to 5 copies of the original Beeton's Christmas Annual.

"The Norwegian Explorers, the University of Minnesota Libraries, and Friends of the Sherlock Holmes Collections will be sponsoring another stellar conference on July 29-Aug 1, 2010. It is titled: “The Spirit of Sherlock Holmes”." Let me know if you want to be on the event mailing list. I'll send you the info to sign up.

Actually, Nigel Bruce did a pretty bang-up job of making watxon look like a total fool, but at least he was fairly entertaining about it.

Bruce was an excellent actor & very intelligent. Watch more closely sometime when he's in the background & Rathbone is monologuing. There are several times when he invents a bit of business that is absolutely scene stealing.
