Bullets

1. I am weeding out many of my vintage patterns. I'll be putting them up in lots on eBay.

2. Ahhhh! I am *ded* from adorably funny.

3. I binged this weekend and it was awesome. Only one mild (very mild) G.I. incident, after eating Yello Sub for lunch yesterday. I'm still bloating a bit post-meal, but not quite as bad.

4. I chose a pattern and washed the fabric for a skirt--the first of my winter wardrobe re-style. I need to find a better source (maybe Sarah's, downtown?) for invisible zippers. The zipper selection at Hancock Fabrics is abominable. They have not a single nine-inch zipper. Ridiculous.

5. The only thing I failed to do this weekend was go shopping for a replacement for my Danskos. Since those are my summer shoes, there's not much of a rush.

6. [info]mckitterick and I enjoyed some slothful snuggle time together. After spending most of Saturday morning in bed, we went mattress shopping and spent another hour lying down on someone else's beds. Then I came home and took a nap.

7. I am starting to actively dread the holidays. I have no desire to participate in the pressure of a constructed notion of familial obligation. In the past, I've simply given the concept a nod and participated to whatever extent I chose. Recently, certain persons have been attempting a guilt trip and now I don't want to acknowledge even the notion of "holiday" at all. I hate it. At this point I'm not even interested in the gifty-bits, which I usually enjoy. December 31 cannot come soon enough.

I laughed so damn hard

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/11/6/

Because, of course, I was laughing at myself.

I am enjoying the game so far, by the way, for all I only just finished one 'Origin'. But I have to say I am impressed - the game keeps surprising me by not going off into 'trite'. Seemingly annoying character? Has a dry, self-aware sense of humor I can totally grok. Initiation quest? On the surface it's all Mcguffin, but if you actually ask about it? Makes sense. Why did they leave those scrolls behind? (I didn't expect much from this, but...) Because they expected to come back. Duh. What ARE those scrolls? (I expected 'scrolls of great magical power') Really old treaties that are likely to be useful here really soon. :O Wait... these make sense. So, putting that together with the 'backgroud chatter' I picked up, the OTHER item we get sent after is likely to have a very practical application. With, I suspect, a high probablity of fatality... well, for the NPCs. Kind of silly otherwise.

Going to Zee the Zoo Zoon

I did my animal chores, checked out the zoo website for weather (gusty but cooler than it'll be rest of the week & with low chance of rain), prices, times & 'shows'. Couldn't print up a map- they'll prob. sell me one. Dug out an extra memory chip for the camera, more batteries, tripod, ripped out page in the manual for timer setting, cleaned lens, got lens cleaning cloth, dumped my purse of things I won't need, added more cash to pay taxi, etc. added sketchbook & a couple pens, found Miami Metro zoo t-shirt in closet (bought from Thrift store long ago), called taxi & found he's available (will be here in about half an hour), called pool guy to tell him not to come to get the papers (it's too windy to leave them on the dor- the wind broke the portable fence AGAIN last night- I just propped it up in the yard) got a few of the GF snacks that [info]vjezkova gave me in my purse & I'm pretty much set to go.

I got pics ready to go up, but don't think I have time to post. So you can look here if you want to see them. Potato vine, Pigeons, Turkey Vulture, Butterfly, etc. All in a muddle-- I need to sort out my Miscellaneous folder one day.

(This page has a few you've already seen. There are more new ones on the next page. I will be posting them when I get back, Lord Willin' an' the crick don' rise' if you'd rather wait & see them the easy way. :^)

KC Game Fair (11/19-11/22)

Is anyone going to KC Game Fair (Nov. 19-22 at Intrigue Park Place Hotel)? I wasn't sure if I was interested, then I checked their events list. They're running an Amber game, Star Wars: KOTOR, Trail of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, L5R and a bunch of other stuff. In my experience, convention games are usually a 50/50 proposition when it comes to having a good time (unless you already know the person running the game and/or who's playing), but a con game of the Amber DRPG on Saturday is enough to make me seriously consider it. Registration info is here.

But you needn't tell the craftsmen...

Between yesterday and this morning I tried an exercise in which I went through the first chapter of a Nora Roberts novel with my vari-colored markers, highlighting dialog, internalizations, actions, descriptive passages etc. It was very encouraging to see that Nora, too, does things you're 'not supposed to.' Including POV violations and long stretches of talking in (past perfect? he/she had done?) and just stating what someone is feeling. (Of those last two, Don Maas says the first is a no-no: you shouldn't use the word 'had' within the first fifty pages of a novel becaues it diminishes the immediacy of a reader's experience; and a couple different sources nix stating 'he felt/she felt' in favor of showing emotion through character reactions.)

What Nora does do really well, that I see on the marked-up pages, is to tightly weave the different things together. Internalizations (thoughts and feelings: purple) are interwoven with actions (blue) and descriptions of setting (green) or people (gold). There are long stretches of purple but they are liberally mixed with green and blue). Descriptions of setting and characters are closely linked to the emotional reactions of the character doing the observation (always purple mixed in with the green and gold, along with dashes of blue - as she describes these things in context of action). Dialog (red for hero, magenta for heroine, peach for others) is always accented with blue and purple.) This all makes for very *colorful,* rich and engaging writing.

B7 Dreams

I just had a dream about at alternate-universe B7 series 4. It had Kerril in it, and Vila sort of saved the day, but being S4 it was still pretty depressing.

An Invisible Empire in the Mad City

Shadow People Haunt the Darkest Corners of Your Dreams
"Juha Arvid Helminen unnerves with his Shadow People, a dreamily creepy series of black-on-black photos that evokes The Invisible Man and Silent Hill's Pyramid Head monsters. His black-wrapped subjects are amassing an army to march through your nightmares."

Juha Arvid Helminen [DeviantArt via Coilhouse]

That last quoted line makes me imagine a Don't Rest Your Head game in this gallery, and I find that awesome.

[EDIT: One episode of Lost in Space that always fucked with me as a kid was "Wreck of the Robot", which featured a disturbing trio of faceless men in black robes with bowlers. They all kind of talked like Boris Karloff].

Nice weekend

Worked out annual council meeting, hanging out with the marrow donor and recipient and attending workshops on transplant science and survivorship.

Also attended a friend's birthday party, did a little yard work with a 10 and 11-year-old helper who we hired to rake. They were very cute and did a great job!

Started making a gallon batch of Grand Marnier from a kit. It starts with just sugar water, yeast and yeast nutrient. You make the alcohol first, then add the clarifiers and flavor.

Also started a 6-gallon kit of Gerwurztraminer.

Also moved my comic book collection out from under the eaves where they've been stored for the last 10 years. started sorting and rebagging. Falling in love with them all over again, marveling at all the distinct memories flooding back about where I was, who I was with, what was happening when I bought or read specific issues. It's like having a time machine.

Wanna guess (approximately) how many I have?

I-Mop Day 8: overdue pr0n

I slipped over time in fiddling with FTP stuff, so I decided to say 'stuff it' and over-run a bit instead of rushing to upload and post. :p

Watson gets to do some lying down in this one, er...moving back slightly towards the 'porn' in the title of this challenge month. I feel there should be some sort of drawing to stickmen ratio in this month, at least. ;) Dressing gown theme because I'm currently being saved from hypothermia by a super-thick dressing gown.

I was in an 'I hate this challenge!' mood while working on this, so apologies if it doesn't have all that much expression. No doubt it is due to concentration. *coff* Sex becomes boring very quickly when it's a daily challenge topic, though my brain is slowly searching out varying definitions of 'porn' that could be shoehorned in. Bumblebee sex and some sort of crazed Lassus thing have some appeal ;) Despite my grumbling, I feel like this steady diet of our friendly pair has put me back in a straightforwardly H/W mode. There are times when I'm hung up on angst, or other pairings in their lives, or 'nothing earlier than 1918!', but at the moment I'm quite a nice, fuzzy 'hurrah for our good lads' place. Also, it's something to do other than sit around looking for that perfect icon-tastic image of Deb from Dexter. Tum te tum...

WARNING: Due to some accidental features of this drawing, comments contain what can only be described as an 'eyeworm' *coughs* :p
